Surf School

Surf's Up Surf School is a team of ISA-certified, English- and Russian-speaking instructors with over 6 years of teaching experience — one of the largest surf schools in Sri Lanka, with more than 10 000 students taught. Lessons run at our home spot in Weligama, 20 meters from the hotel: a safe sandy entry, consistent waves and warm water all year round.

How a lesson works

1 — Theory and safety

The theory part takes place at the school and lasts about an hour: ocean safety rules and the proper take-off technique — popping up onto the board.

2 — Warm-up and land practice

Before every session: warm-up, drills and land-based surf trainers to lock in the movements before you hit the water.

3 — Practice in the water

The lesson moves into the ocean, where you apply everything you've just learned — always under your instructor's close supervision.

4 — Photo and video analysis

A photographer shoots your sessions from the beach; on lessons 3, 5, 7 and 10 we review your technique on photo and video. All your surf photos are yours to keep, free.

Turning and catching green waves

Your progression

Around lesson 3–4 most students move on to the line-up: more theory on how the ocean and waves work, turning and picking the right wave. By the end of the course many students are ready for reef waves — once turning and board control are dialed in.

Kids' lessons

Children from 7 years old learn in one-on-one lessons only — for safety and faster progress. Kids' surfing is the heart of our Family Surf Camp.

FAQ

I've never surfed before. Can I join?+

Absolutely — that's exactly who we teach. The course starts from zero: safety, take-off technique, land practice, then the water.

How big are the groups?+

Never more than 6 students per instructor, and you get individual attention in every lesson.

Is equipment included?+

Yes. Board rental and the full equipment kit (rash guards, zinc and more) are free for school students — for your entire stay, including free-surf time outside lessons.

How fast will I progress?+

Most students stand up and ride to the beach in the first lessons, move to the line-up around lesson 3–4, and by lesson 10 are turning and catching green waves.

When is the season?+

Weligama works year-round: warm ocean, consistent waves and a safe entry make it ideal for learning any month of the year.
